# Take card payments

> Connect your own Stripe account so you can charge guests by card, and choose how deposits are handled.

Card payments let you charge guests directly from a reservation instead of only
recording what they've paid elsewhere. The money goes to **your** Stripe
account, not ours — Superhost takes no cut of it.

This is optional. Leave it off and the folio keeps working exactly as it does
today: you record payments by hand, and nothing changes.

<Note>
  This is separate from your Superhost subscription, which is covered in
  [Billing](/properties/billing). One is what you pay us; this is what your
  guests pay you.
</Note>

<Note>
  Connecting the account and choosing how deposits work are **Owner** jobs — the
  Payments screen only appears for a property Owner. Once it's set up, anyone who
  can open a reservation can collect a payment against it.
</Note>

## Connect your Stripe account

1. Go to your property's settings, open **Integrations**, and tap **Card
   payments** under **Payments**.
2. Turn on **Card payments**.
3. Tap **Connect Stripe account**.
4. Complete Stripe's setup. If you already have a Stripe account, sign in and
   use it rather than creating another.

Stripe asks for your business details, and sometimes for documents. You're
setting up an account that belongs to you: your payouts, your fees, your tax
forms, and your dashboard.

When Stripe is satisfied, the Payments screen shows **Ready to take payments**
and a **Collect payment** button appears on your reservations. See
[Collect a payment](/reservations/collect-payment).

<Tip>
  Stripe sometimes takes a few seconds to finish after you come back to the app.
  If the screen still says setup is unfinished, tap **Check again**.
</Tip>

### If it isn't ready yet

The **Card payments** card under Integrations carries a short badge —
**Connected**, **Off**, or one of the states below. Open it for the full
wording, which tells you which of these you're in:

* **Setup unfinished** — you didn't get to the end of Stripe's form. Tap
  **Continue Stripe setup** to pick up where you left off; you won't start over.
* **Action needed** — Stripe wants more information, usually a document. Handle
  it in your Stripe account.
* **Disabled by Stripe** — Stripe has turned the account off. Only Stripe can
  review this, so tap **Open Stripe** to appeal to them.

Until it's ready, **Collect payment** on a reservation is greyed out. The
Payments screen is where it says why. Your folio still works; you just can't
charge cards yet.

## Choose how deposits work

Once the account is ready, a **Deposits** setting appears:

* **Charge it** — take the deposit up front. It lands in your Stripe balance,
  and giving it back is a refund.
* **Hold it on the card** — reserve the amount on the guest's card without
  taking it, then capture what you need or release the rest.

Pick whichever suits how you run the property. Holds suit incidentals; charging
suits an advance payment you intend to keep. This affects deposits only —
balances are always charged.

Changing it affects the next deposit you take. Holds already on a guest's card
keep working the way they were created.

<Warning>
  Card holds expire after about 7 days. If that's shorter than your stays, or
  you need cover after checkout, choose **Charge it**. Details in
  [Collect a payment](/reservations/collect-payment#capture-or-release-a-hold).
</Warning>

## Turning it off

Switching **Card payments** off stops new collections. It does not disconnect or
delete your Stripe account, so turning it back on later doesn't mean setting up
again. Payments already taken are unaffected, and you can still refund them.

## Where the money goes

Guests pay on Stripe's own page, so their card details never touch Superhost or
your device. Charges are made on your account: Stripe's processing fee comes out
there, payouts run on your Stripe schedule, and any dispute is between you and
Stripe. Your Stripe dashboard is where you'll find payouts and statements.
